My running shoes and I got reacquainted today for the first time since I fell sick what seems like an eternity ago. It was a fabulous reunion. I remember why we've become such good friends.
I started off walking at a slow, perhaps too-comfortable pace, and after 10 minutes I was bored. I knew I could do better. So I stepped up the pace to 15min/mi, a light jog, for another 10 minutes. I was breathing just fine. I didn't feel any violent cough attacks pending. So, I pushed it further to my regular "training pace" of around 12min/mi. And this just wasn't enough... I pushed it to what I figure is my "healthy race pace" of just above 11min/mi and guess what? I felt great. Who knows if I'll be able to sustain that or better pace come race day. Still working out a race strategy.
This one tiny run put a lot of my crazy headgames of doubt to rest. Worries built up over the past 10 days about my fitness level went *poof* in just 43 minutes today. I am so elated.
